About Marvellous History

School Workshops since 2012

Long ago in the mists of time (well, 2012), Domini Thorpe and Jude Bloomfield created Viking School Visits. Specialising in Vikings & Anglo Saxons, they would go all over the UK to inspire children with a passion for history. Sadly, Jude passed away unexpectedly in 2015, but Dom decided to continue the business in her name.

We have slept in ancient houses, baked our own bread, made butter and cheese, brewed our own mead, spun our own wool and sewn our own clothes.

Our experiences enable us to relate tales from first hand experience about life in the past

Interactive & Authentic History

Historical authenticity has always been at the core of what we provide, and everything we display is an accurate replica. We provide information backed up with evidence, and where something is open to interpretation we explain how historians use evidence to come up with theories. Children can be astonished that history – or our understanding of it – can change! We can always provide academic references for what we say and are constantly updating our research.

The more fun children have, the more inspired and engaged the children will be. With this in mind we have created our own range of interactive games and activities designed to be both exciting and educational. You can find more about our workshops here.

Growing and Learning

Over the years the popularity of the workshops has grown, and we now have a network of experts around the country who brought knowledge of other time periods along with Vikings and Anglo Saxons. This allowed us to begin offering workshops in everything from the Stone Age to WWII in 2019.

In 2020, when the world ground to a halt thanks to Coronavirus, we knew we needed to help teachers in a time when only digital communication was allowed. We took our workshop ideas and developed a range of interactive live-streams and interactive video presentations. They have proved extremely popular and have also allowed us to branch out overseas, to schools as far apart as Corfu and Hong Kong!

Into the future

Over time it became obvious we needed a name that reflected the wide variety of workshops we now offer. After all, who would think to look for a Tudor visitor at a Viking company? Holding true to our core values of historical accuracy and a passion for sharing our love of history, we became Marvellous History!

Now, Marvellous History is a nationwide team of enthusiastic experts who can provide a Costumed Historical Visitor for almost any event and any historical period. You can meet all our visitors on our Visitors page. We regularly provide WOW days for schools, but we can also do anything from a school holiday club to a stag do! Get in touch to find out more about how we can help you bring some historical fun to your event or function.

Marvellous History are also members of both the Historical Association and the International Museum Theatre Alliance.

In Memoriam

Over the years we have lost some of our beloved team. We keep these memorials here to honour them and their contribution to our lives, and the hundreds of others they inspired.
